Purpose:
Make NaCl and KCl Molar solutions and make a 10% Sucrose solution.
Materials:
Beaker
Stir plate
Stir bars
Graduated cylinder
lab tape
3 Solution bottles
di Water
Weigh boat
Analytical balance
NaCl: Fisher Scientific Lot 112422, BP 358-2T2
KCl: Fisher Scientific Lot 080772, BP 2M-3
Sucrose: Fisher Scientific Lot 006196, BP 2201
Method:
First Solution:
1. Calculations:
200mL of 0.1M NaCl (Molecular weight of NaCl=58.49)
200mL x 1 Liter x 0.1 Mol x 58.49g
1000mL 1 Liter 1 Mol
After cross cancelling units and doing the math I determined I will need approximately 1.169g NaCl.
2. Weighed 1.1695g NaCl in weigh boat using A&D ER120A.
3. Added stir bar, 100mL di Water, and NaCl to beaker (in that order).
4. Put beaker on stir plate and waited for all of the NaCl to dissolve in the solution.
5. Poured mixed solution into a 100mL graduated cylinder. Then I rinsed the beaker with additional diWater to bring to volume (BTV).
6. Solution labeled and shelved above my work bench.
Second Solution:
400mL of 0.05M KCl (Formula weight for KCl is 74.55g/mol)
1. Calculations:
400mL x 1 Liter x 74.55g x 0.05Mol
1000 mL 1 Mol 1 Liter
After cross cancelling units and doing the math I determined I will need approximately 1.491g KCl.
2. Weighed 1.4916g KCL using A&D ER120A analytical balance.
3. Added stir bar, 100 mL diWater in 250mL beaker, and 1.4916g KCl.
4. Placed on stirrer for approximately 1 minute on level 2.
5. Used additional stirrer on outside of beaker to keep the stir bar in while I transferred the solution to 100mL graduated cylinder.
6. Added more diWater to beaker to rinse and BTV in cylinder.
7. Labeled and shelved above my work bench.
Third Solution:
75mL of 10% (w/v) Sucrose
1. Calculations:
75mL x 0.1 Sucrose = 7.5mg
2. Weighed 7.5012g Sucrose and added to beaker with stir bar and approximately 50mL diWater already in beaker.
3. Placed on stirrer for approximately 3 minutes.
4. Poured mixture into 100mL graduated cylinder.
5. Rinsed beaker with additional diWater. Then added diWater to cylinder to BTV.
